After Munich, the tour continued to Salzburg, Austria, the birthplace of Mozart! But first we pit-stopped at the Trumer Pils brewery. This multi-generation-owned brewery was a pleasure to tour with lunch and a beer tasting.
Once the tour group was filled up with sausage and pilsner, we finished our quick travels to Salzburg. We were impressed how short the bus rides to each destination were. Our tour guide, Jana, kept us entertained with history, games, and she even bought us little local gifts at each of our stops. It's those thoughtful "extras" that made this tour feel personal.
Upon our orientation walk we enjoyed the medieval streets, our cozy family-owned hotel, and absolutely stunning views of the Hohensalzburg Fortress.
The following day was a full day in Salzburg where we received a full guided tour of the old town and Mirabell Palace & Gardens, followed by an apple strudel (apfelstrudel) making class. It was so interesting to see some of the areas of Mirabell Palace that were in scenes from The Sound of Music. During our free time, we went to Stiftsbäckerei St. Peter which has been open since the 12th century, the oldest operating bakery. Delicious sourdough rolls!
That evening, there was an optional excursion to attend a dinner and opera. The opera was Don Giovanni by Mozart, who of course was famously born in Salzburg. We both had never been to an opera performance and we were amazed that even though we did not speak the language, we could follow along with the storyline while we enjoyed our meals.

Tips to future Salzburg travelers:
- Run, don't walk to Stiftsbäckerei St Peter for some baked goods. They were insanely cheap (0.50 euro each or something cheap), and authentic.
- Walk around at night. The City is quiet, but aglow with beautiful restaurants, wine bars, and charm.
- Hike to the fortress if you are able (we are lazy and took the gondola). Our fellow travelers hiked it and said it was moderate, but rewarding.
